Troop Lines?

I usually put my infantry all around my cities, so as to create a mono-color line to stop opponents before then they come exactly in the city, but i've noted that the tanks easy pass this line and conquest my fortress. So, I wonder: Is there a way to place my troops so that they can be more effective?
