Pardon my ignorance. My friends and I just started playing a few days ago and we ran into a situation the other night that confused us all. I was hoping that you guys could explain. In short, my friend attacked an enemy's city. However, when the turn activated, we watched my friend's offensive force get attacked by the forces from the city he chose to attack, and get destroyed. If he had been attacking as commanded, this would not have been the case, but for some reason our enemy seemed to have priority. None of us have any more than loose theories as to why this happened. A similar case came up later when I attacked a mobile army (not in a city). When the turn activated, I moved to the spot that they had been, and the army had used a movement. No attack or defense was made. The same thing happened to me before when I tried attacking a moving navy with my own fleet of warships. I'm not sure how it happened, though I have a theory that if an enemy moves in the same turn that you attack them, it becomes two movements. Is that right? I'm still new to the game, so I was hoping that one of you might shed some light on this for us. Thank you for your time.

Apparently what you are describing is TB ( turn block). Its where you have an army going to attack a location but someone's attacks said army and stops it/completely destroys it. TB is judged by turn priority ( the order you make your moves (attacking moving units etc) ). To prevent this you can prioritize your moves so your most important movements go first.

So if my friend made the attack as his first movement of the turn, it might have been a successful attack?

Exactly. Bear in mind there is a luck factor involved. If its your opponents first move too its a 50/50 chance as I recall.
