Why can't I attack?

Why weren't my ships able to attack, it was marked as red, when I had the reach to attack enemy ships? Yet it I couldn't? Just ruined one of my games completely. Is it flawed game mechanic or what's causing this, either way it's stupid.

Does it have something to do with them being in defensive line? if so then it's just bad game mechanics..

I already left the game, I'll draw the situation. First I tried attacking directly which did have the distance for sure, On the part which you see above, I tried going down a bit and then attack, as in two steps insted of just one line. Yet I couldn't attack even though I had the reach I even moved my troops right on top of his and tried clicking, but I couldn't attack. so all they had going on was that defensive line.

Can't take more pics as that made me rage quit.

That's a wall formed by the ground units in the naval units. You can't break walls formed by ground units on water with naval units if the distance between them is less than ~10% since I'm guessing you tried to break it with a destroyer/transport/whatever.

If you superimpose your sea trans, they will form part of the wall.

Seriously?? You rage quit for that? Lol.

Partly because of that, yes. Why waste time. My only ally that could help me left the game so I was destinied to be doomed on turn 5 lol, had I been able to ward off that attack with ships, I would have conquered whole britannia in no time and would have been ready to fight for france/spain. Now my enemy noticed that I was without help and decided to take the chance and attack me with all what he had, as he had no one to threat him. Anyway don't you think that is quite bad game mechanic to have? Rendering my navy useless by doing that?

Fight in anyways. Great way to earn more SP. I once lost a 3 Vs 1 where it was me as a United Europe versus the world. I lost, but still got more SP than any of them despite my SP being cut in half due to the loss. Suck on that allyfags xD

Not really. Use a bomber. They're cheaper than naval units.
Destroyers=250
Naval trans= 250
Bomber=180

Higher range too. Air units can break just fine

Modded game, it was fall of rome, so no bombers there.

Also I had no troops to fight with, he would have taken my cities before I could have reinforced them, I would have been attacked from north and south. I had maybe 3 rounds more to live. My plan relied on that my navy can block anything that is coming close to britannia while I take down Scotland, which was about to happen in a matter of few reinfocements.
